A canoe-shaped gathering place points toward a rich past and bright future at the University of Wisconsin

Named in honor of the university’s second president, William R. Davies, this new student center is a hub for social and cultural interaction.

The building occupies the site of an historic Indian meeting ground and fittingly provides a welcome place of shelter and community for today’s students. Its design draws inspiration from this rich history and beautiful surroundings—the Chippewa River, woods, and stone formations. Its distinctive canoe shape points to the Chippewa River.

The center features retail dining services, with servery and indoor/outdoor dining space, as well as two ballrooms, a theater, a campus nightclub, and offices for administration and the student council. The building was designed to meet the US Green Building Council Silver rating. Eco-friendly elements include a green roof, sustainable site landscaping, water efficient fixtures, and interior finishes that are recycled, rapidly renewable and locally sourced. Building systems consume 30% less energy than current code requires.
