Delivering a fully-reconstructed corridor in time for compliance, and for 5% less than the budget

Upgrading accessibility to 40 blocks of the City of Paso Robles’ main thoroughfare and downtown City Park involved significant civil engineering, surveying, and construction management and inspection services. Paso Robles was challenged by a lawsuit to bring their sidewalks into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the City called on us to handle the job.

We implemented grades 0.5% to 1.0% below the American with Disabilities Act and Title 24 tolerances (1.5% vs. 2.0% cross slopes), helping ensure that the new curb ramps and sidewalks were code compliant. Our engineers also adjusted the gutter grades from less than 5% to less than 2% in anticipation of future code changes.

And, the project was completed for less than the City’s original budget. During construction, there were only two RFIs and change orders totaled less than 5% of the total contract value. We did it all—delivering a fully reconstructed corridor within 18 months of the consent decree.
