Route 134 & Upper County Road Safety Improvements
With the 22-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail to the north, Route 134 was an ideal junction that could link a one-mile stretch in the Town of Dennis to the Rail Trail and create safer mobility for all users. A corridor upgrade would answer the community’s desire to connect a local business district to the Rail Trail, while also improving connectivity for the network of small communities along the Rail Trail and Route 28.
To help Dennis residents build the connections they wanted, our team designed a significant upgrade to establish bicycle and pedestrian accommodations along the corridor and onto Upper County Road. Stormwater management improvements such as leaching galleys and a rain garden were also incorporated to capture and treat runoff.
The most challenging aspect of this project involved widening the corridor to accommodate bike lanes and sidewalks without negatively affecting abutters or the environment, as the project was constrained by protected wetlands on both sides. For the Upper County Road portion of the project, the team worked with the Town to develop a new alignment, updated lane configuration, and modified sidewalks that avoided the critical areas.
With these roadway improvements in place, the people of Dennis have an exciting new connection to the historic Cape Cod Rail Trail.
