Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Upgrade Base Wide Fire Alarm

The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) had a 100-year-old fire alarm system that was out of date, difficult to repair, and did not report the level of alarm detail that was required for effective emergency response. The solution? A modern networked system that would connect multiple remote buildings across the entire shipyard and provide a safe, reliable fire alarm system for all shipyard personnel.

We completed the electrical engineering services to implement the new transmission network and replace the existing telegraphing system, establishing remote monitoring of the base wide fire alarm system at the regional dispatch center (RDC) at Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bangor. The system connectivity between PSNS buildings utilized the facility’s existing RS-485 hard copper wiring and the multimode fiber optic cabling infrastructure.

When an alarm control condition occurs, an audible alarm, indicator lamp, alphanumeric display, and a printed record of the condition is presented by the system to remote operating personnel. The system is a solid state, microprocessor-based alarm monitoring unit that uses state-of-the-art devices and circuitry to supervise, continuously monitor, and display the status of all connected alarms.
