Northeastern University
Northeastern University’s South Lake Union Campus is all about connection. Connection to the city, to the local tech companies, and even to fellow tenants in the 401 Terry Ave N building it inhabits. In today’s globalized world, the Boston-based university believes that connection is more important than ever.
In the spirit of keeping the university community connected with the greater city, the exterior walls of the building are mostly glass—this entices passersby to take notice while allowing students to look out onto the streets of Seattle. Our team provided lighting design and used these glass walls as an opportunity for daylight to reduce the need for electric light. This is just one strategy used to minimize the building’s power use and help it achieve LEED Platinum Certification. The university also maximizes its small space by sharing a conference room with the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB), a fellow tenant. ISB uses the room for business during the day, and in the evenings it becomes a video-conference classroom for students. The new satellite campus building allows more students to get a great education in downtown Seattle while also making connections with nearby corporations.
Now complete, this building welcomes learning, collaboration, and demonstrates a high regard for the environment.
