NC 150 Corridor Study (NCDOT STIP Projects R-2307 and I-5717)
How do you improve safety and mobility in a rapidly growing suburban area where traffic bottlenecks and frustrated drivers are the norm? The North Carolina DOT opted to widen 16 miles of the NC 150 corridor between Denver and Mooresville. They asked our team to prepare the environmental documents and develop the preliminary design.
Limited rights-of-way and numerous access points along the corridor meant we’d need innovative design concepts. After analyzing several conventional and unconventional options to improve traffic flow, we recommended adding one lane in each direction of NC 150. We used a series of alternative intersection designs, including various Superstreets and a continuous flow intersection to improve operational efficiency. To achieve similar traffic operations, traditional intersections would have required two additional lanes in each direction.
Our creative solution not only improves safety and mobility, it saves many businesses along the corridor that would otherwise have been acquired. It also extends the project life by 10 years, operating acceptably through 2045. A conventional widening and intersections would have failed by 2035.
