National Grid - Gardenville Station Rebuild

When the Gardenville 115 kilovolt facility, National Grid’s largest station, experienced poor performance due to equipment malfunction and deterioration, National Grid called on our environmental team to lay the foundation for a new substation by successfully obtaining all environmental permits and approvals while also addressing community needs. Our team of scientists, designers, environmental engineers, and landscape architects handled all the work in-house–efficiently and effectively.

One major challenge was the  presence of extensive wetlands on the site–in areas with electrical components that had to remain operational.  It took creativity to locate replacement areas for the .4 acres filled in under the electrical components.

We found two areas nearby that provided us with .75 acres to create new wetlands. We also worked to eliminate invasive plant species on the remaining 10 acres. We successfully negotiated with the town and regulatory agencies on behalf of National Grid. Our design for wetland mitigation provided new habitat, enhanced community access, mitigated the loss of the original wetlands, and cleared the way for National Grid’s new substation project.
