Kurram Tangi Dam Environmental Assessment
Given the need for a reliable source of renewable energy in Pakistan, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) had been working with Stantec on hydropower plants in the region. Prior to construction, the Kurram Tangi hydroelectric project would need to comply with several environmental requirements.
Our team leveraged over 50 years of hydropower engineering and design experience in Pakistan to conduct an environmental and social Impact assessment (ESIA) that identified and proposed mitigation measures for adverse effects of this multipurpose dam project. The scope of our services covered all aspects of environmental assessment, including an environmental monitoring and management plan (EMMP) which involved social assessments, six supplemental technical reports, and 11 technical background reports to the client to facilitate future work on the project. With social assessments for resettlement, vulnerable tribes, cultural preservation, and gender, this work comprehensively considered the effects of the project in the region.
Once constructed, the multipurpose dam will generate 83.4MW of power, provide flood control, and develop and rehabilitate a total of 346,000 acres of land for irrigation.
