Kentucky River Lock and Dam 8 Engineering Services
Located on the Kentucky River in Kentucky’s Garrard and Jessamine Counties, Lock and Dam 8 was originally constructed between the years of 1898 and 1900. While numerous repairs have been performed at the facility throughout its years of operation, the condition of the dam, lock structure, lock gates, ancillary structures, and mechanical components were in an active state of deterioration and failure. The Kentucky River Authority (KRA) reached out to our engineers to help.
Beginning in 2000, we provided a number of engineering services relating to the study, design, and construction of remedial measures to reduce leakage and the risk of pool loss at Lock and Dam 8. Despite these efforts, the water surface in Pool 8 continued to drop below the crest of the dam during severe droughts resulting in water supply shortages and water quality issues for surrounding communities reliant on the pool.
In response, KRA contracted us to provide engineering services for planned renovations at the Lock and Dam 8 facility to address water supply issues. The renovation scope included an assessment of existing facility conditions, geotechnical study, and evaluation of structural stability for relevant load conditions, preparation of permit applications, and the development of designs, drawings, and specifications for the renovation construction.
Through KRA’s dedication to maintaining Lock and Dam 8, residents of the area can now enjoy a reliable water supply for years to come.
