Implementation of One-Way Tolls & Express E-ZPass
Tolls are a necessary inconvenience. But what if that was only true half the time? The New Jersey Turnpike Authority wanted to improve traffic times and enhance the travel experience along the Garden State Parkway—a state-long highway that connects Cape May in the south to Montvale in the north.
We started on the project with preliminary design, contract documentation, toll studies, and topographical surveys. Final designs and construction support came next. The existing toll plazas were demolished then reconstructed. New designs offer toll-free, free-flow traffic in one direction for Garden State commuters. Alongside the toll plaza improvements, we designed overhead sign structures and a new 5,000 square foot (465 square metre) toll administration building.
There were some community concerns about evacuation routes, south to north, in Cape May and Barnegat. To address that, we designed E-ZPass lanes that would reduce congestion by expediting E-ZPass customer vehicles. The change to one-way tolls transitioned the Garden State Parkway to a smoother form of travel.
