Interstate 405 HOV Continuous Access Improvements

Since the Orange County Transportation Authority created closed High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes in 1996, the steep rise in traffic has made it increasingly difficult for commuters to access and use these lanes. To address this challenge, we designed a continuous access solution that allows commuters to safely enter and exit HOV lanes at will, easing congestion and improving motorists’ safety.

On I‐405 from the I‐405/I‐5 separation to SR‐73, the project converts the existing buffer‐separated and limited ingress/egress access HOV facility to continuous ingress/egress access. HOV connectors are also being elongated from 50:1 to 115:1 to help further mitigate traffic build-up. This approach increases mobility, reduces traffic, and improves public safety. Our strong working relationships with the transportation Authority, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and Federal Highway Administration have allowed us to successfully meet all project requirements.

Additionally, we provided preconstruction and construction phase expertise to Orange County Transportation Authority through the bid and initial construction periods.
