Harrisburg University - UPMC Health Sciences Tower

Just a few years ago, Harrisburg University of Science and Technology (HU) enrolled about 900 students. Today, the total enrollment is over 6,000 students from 103 countries, filling up the university’s first tower.

After meeting with local stakeholders, HU heard serious concerns about healthcare professional shortages and the need to expand the university’s offerings in the areas of advanced manufacturing and digital media. Based on this feedback, they committed to the UPMC Health Sciences Tower: a second mixed-use tower on the urban campus.

The new $90 million, 11-story building focuses on health sciences, advanced manufacturing, and digital media. A key component of the tower is the classrooms and simulation labs that support the university’s various healthcare programs, including nursing, pharmaceutical sciences, exercise sciences, and other allied health programs. The simulation (SIM) labs allow students to practice in real-world surgery, pediatric, emergency, cardiac, and general hospital settings. The remaining suite supports a curriculum focused on the continuum of care. This model enabled the university to create a simulated hospital setting without compromising the flexibility and functionality of the learning environment.

Now complete, this second tower is a visible commitment to HU’s continued focus on transforming higher education while helping to revive Harrisburg and the surrounding region.
