Hefei Particle Therapy Medical Center

Located within China’s Anhui province, Hefei City serves as the state capital with a population of 7.5 million. The Hefei Particle Therapy Medical Center will provide advanced cancer treatment to a large population with a steadily rising cancer rate.

The center is being developed in two phases with the first phase focusing on the proton treatment center consisting of three gantries, and fixed beam rooms for clinical use and research purposes. Our role included executive project design for the facility and detailed design for the proton components, including treatment rooms and technical support spaces. We worked closely with a Local Design Institute (LDI) from concept design through construction.

One of our larger challenges was getting timely approval on radiation shielding. Foundation design had been completed and construction had begun when Chinese reviewing authorities changed shielding requirements and walls between treatment rooms were required to increase by one meter. We worked closely with the equipment vendor, shielding consultant, and engineering consultants to minimize disruption to design and construction.

Completed in 2020, the project serves as a premiere destination for scientific advancement and world class cancer treatment.
