Gulpur Hydropower Project
Summers in Pakistan are hot and partly because of this, electricity shortages are common. To help avoid power shortages, a private power development company set out to generate 102 megawatts of clean, renewable hydropower near the town of Gulpur.
Initially the project owner wanted to use a layout that would have suffered severe problems with siltation (deposit of river sediments) in a very few years. Also, this original project layout would have required relocating over 100 households and would nearly dry up about seven kilometres (four miles) of river habitat. To address these issues, we revised the project location and layout, eliminating resettlement and the stretch of dried-up river. We also addressed sedimentation in a way that will enable long-term, reliable operation. During design and construction of the project, we reviewed about 4,400 engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor submittals and monitored construction at the site—to establish that the work was completed in compliance with project requirements.
Now that this hydropower project is operational, it’s helping to alleviate brownouts and rolling blackouts, allowing local businesses to operate more continuously and helping to improve the economy. The result? Pakistan has more reliable, sustainable energy for generations to come.
