George M. Sullivan Plant 2A Expansion, Municipal Light & Power

Serving the community of Anchorage, Alaska, the George M. Sullivan Power Plant 2A is one of the most energy-efficient thermal generation plants in the world. To improve reliability for their customers, our client—Municipal Light & Power, hired us to provide several engineering and design services.

As part of the Quanta Power Generation engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) team for the new 120-megawatt combined-cycle thermal power plant, we aided by offering our engineering, design, and project management expertise to expand the George M. Sullivan Power Plant 2A.

The plant will be designed in a 2 x 1 combined cycle configuration using General Electric’s LM6000 combustion-turbine technology. Designing with sustainability in mind, the facility is also expected to use less natural gas and release fewer emissions than traditional thermal plants.

The result? Completed in 2016, the George M. Sullivan Power Plant 2A now has two new LM6000 combined turbine generators, two steam generators, one Siemens steam turbine, and a snow melt system.
