Fern Trail Streambank Stabilization
With a storied history in a picturesque landscape, Signal Mountain is situated on Waldon Ridge by the Tennessee river. A perched stormwater outfall created erosion along the stream bank of Shoal Creek. Previous attempts by the Town of Signal Mountain to stabilize the slope had not been successful. The Town had a limited budget, but they needed a permanent fix for the problem and engaged us to provide a solution.
Because the outfall is in a residential area with rock outcroppings, wooded landscape, and typical mountain stream surroundings, an aesthetic solution was needed. Final design incorporated rock plunge pools to stabilize the channel banks that blended into the surroundings as if it were an adjacent tributary feeding Shoal Creek. The restoration of this eroded stream bank resulted in small pools and riffles that splash down the short, steep grade into the adjacent stream channel. Natural, local boulders were used, as well as coir-wrapped soil layers with live staking of native stream bank vegetation.
The result? Our natural-looking, cost-effective solution for the Town of Signal Mountain helped restore the stream bank of Shoal Creek.
