Downtown Raleigh Pedestrian Safety Improvements

Providing plans for better pedestrian accessibility and connectivity

Inclusivity for all community members

Raleigh is the vibrant capital city of North Carolina with inspiring opportunities that give people reasons to call it home. There’s a lot to do and see, and the City realized they needed better pedestrian accessibility and connectivity for users of all abilities. They engaged us to design improvements to multiple intersections in Raleigh’s downtown.

We prepared plans, specifications, and estimates for roadway and signalization improvements to intersections in the downtown—with pedestrian connectivity provided through Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant curb ramps and countdown pedestrian signals. Our work consisted of site investigations, right-of-way (ROW) certification, and a programmatic categorical exclusion (PCE). We also completed a Certificate of Appropriateness to show that improvements wouldn’t interfere with historical character of intersections—this project included intersections within or adjacent to several historic districts, including Prince Hall, Oakwood, Blount Street, and Capitol Square.

The result? Now that intersections are upgraded, downtown Raleigh is a more inclusive space where people of different needs and mobility are welcome.
