Commingled Plume and Underground Storage Tank Assessment
Visitors of the quiet historic gold mining town of Julian are captured by its history, charm, and apple orchards. Our staff is working to keep it that way.
Four leaking underground storage tanks created a large commingled groundwater plume. We developed a corrective action plan (CAP) and remediation strategy to incorporate design elements to address the concerns of community stakeholders and regulatory agencies, with the goal of protecting and restoring groundwater usage.
We worked with the client, Regional Water Quality Control Board, and local oversight groups to refine the strategy and update the original cleanup and abatement order. We developed a subsurface geologic model to formulate an effective remediation strategy: soil vapor extraction (SVE) pilot testing; preparing site-specific SVE system design plans; permitting with local and state agencies; construction bidding, support, and startup; and installation of numerous groundwater monitoring and vapor extraction wells with an average depth of 240 feet.
We worked with citizens and Julian’s architectural review board to blend aboveground components into the local historic architecture—maintaining the town’s appeal.
