Community First! Village
Community First! Village, a program by Mobile Loaves & Fishes, is a 27-acre master-planned community based on the RV community model—but on steroids. This development’s goal is to lift the chronically homeless population of Austin, Texas, off the street and provide affordable, sustainable housing. The focus, however, is on building more than houses; it’s about creating a community.
The site includes 120 units with room for over 100 more. There’s an outdoor Alamo Drafthouse movie theater, a medical facility, a community market, walking trails, and over six acres of organic and sustainable farming. The micro units (with 11 different floor plans) are effectively bedrooms with electric utilities and basic kitchen essentials. Residents share laundry facilities, washroom facilities, and a state-of-the-art communal kitchen.
So far, the first phase is complete and the second is underway. The response to the project has been overwhelmingly positive, with Mobile Loaves & Fishes receiving inquiries from all over the country about their concept. When creating a project like this, you have to put people first. It’s not just about building someone a roof, it’s about creating an organic, integrated, and supportive community. By making community the priority, Community First! Village is improving the lives of their formerly homeless residents, building self-determination while restoring dignity and hope.
