Cleveland Remediation Project
The Cleveland site is a former chemical manufacturing facility that operated along the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio for nearly a century. Our client retains ownership of three parcels (~15 acres) associated with the former 55-acre plant, including a three-story, 70,000-square-foot industrial building. Soil and groundwater at the three parcels is largely impacted with metals and radioactive constituents.
The radioactive constituents are being remediated by the US Army Corps of Engineers through the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP). Metals and other constituents of concern are being investigated and remediated by Stantec. An excavation project was implemented in March of 2013 to address ~1,200 tons of impacted soil at one parcel being remediated under the Ohio Voluntary Action Program (VAP).
The 70,000 square foot building was demolished in 2014 as an interim remedy within FUSRAP. Prior to demolition, approximately 500 cubic yards of waste stockpiled in the building was assessed and removed for off-site disposal by Stantec. The complex waste stream included Class 7 radioactive materials, asbestos, PCBs, and RCRA hazardous waste.
