Air Traffic Control Tower and Utility Building at Ellington Airport
Houston Airports developed a new advanced air traffic control tower (ATCT) at Ellington Airport to support its general aviation tenants, military operations, and future Spaceport missions. This replaced the former air traffic control tower built in 1955 and features new radios and equipment to improve communication with aircraft.
The Airport asked Stantec to take control of construction management after the project fell behind schedule. There were multiple outstanding issues, but our team lead’s prior military experience with ATCTs and other projects at Houston Airports helped us meet challenges. An Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) was installed to meet current Spaceport certification requirements and can determine cloud heights, temperature, rainfall amounts, the presence of lightning in the area, and other conditions. The airfield's lighting-control system was also updated to a more robust and reliable system.
Overall, the project resulted in a new tower, utility building, utility yard and parking area, and the purchase and installation of navigational and communication equipment necessary for effective operation. The new tower is vital to the continuation of all Ellington Joint Reserve Base military, Spaceport, and all other general aviation activities.
