Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games

In 2018, just under two billion people tuned in to watch the Winter Olympics in South Korea. The expansive Gangneung Winter Olympic Park featured four competition venues connected by a large common area.

The plaza hosted spectators with and without event tickets and included live site coverage, retail, food and beverage outlets, and a sponsor activities area. 2,780 competing athletes and over 58,000 employees meant the traffic was high, equating to a vast number of complex interactions in the common area. This left the potential for disorderly and uncomfortable movement around the space—that’s where we came in.

Our clients asked us to build a microsimulation pedestrian model of Gangneung Olympic Park to demonstrate its performance during critical phases of operation. The model build required assimilating a large amount of data, including forecast demand, competition schedule, and the park layout. We extracted density maps, animations, and queuing times to give our clients vital information for the venue’s operational plans.

This project continued a track record of success—we’ve worked with our clients on planning for the London, Sochi, and Rio Olympic events. They praised our team as responsive and highly competent, with pragmatism and operational knowledge that sets us apart in the field.
