Victoria Avenue East Widening and Bridge Replacement

Regina’s Victoria Avenue has over 40,000 vehicles traveling on it every day. As a primary entrance into the city and connection to some of the busiest commercial properties, it holds great value to the community. Traffic is contained to only four lanes, and major congestion and delays are common. Large intersections and high traffic volumes create safety risks for pedestrians and discourage alternative transportation. It could stand an update.

The most challenging design element in making changes was the location and design of the Victoria Avenue bridges over Pilot Butte Creek. Our team explored options to relocate the stream, but a multi-use underpass seemed the most effective in fulfilling both driver and pedestrian needs.

To create an open and more inviting space, a grating system was designed. This allows light, air, and sound to mitigate the tunnel feeling, while still providing a safe and obstacle-free intersection approach for the high volumes of traffic on the surface. To help with congestion and safety, Victoria Avenue capacity would be increased by adding lanes, and removing the bridge rails and approach barriers.

The result? Better traffic flow and greater safety for everybody.
