St. John's Convention Centre

Designing for a prominent city location demands iconic structures with dominant curb appeal that create pedestrian-friendly urban spaces. When the City of St. John’s conceived plans for renovating the convention centre, they approached our team to restore 50,000 square feet of existing space and develop a 75,000-square-foot addition. Our objective was to better meet the needs of the business and tourism industries by increasing the number of conventions held each year.

While a convention center traditionally does not rely on natural light, we wanted to create a greater feeling of openness to bring together St. John’s audiences. On the outside, we used glazed storefronts with frosted-etched glass and sustainable LED lighting—creating a reflection of pedestrians during the day and a dazzling backlit projection at night. On the inside, we focused on developing and procuring furniture for each function of the center. We facilitated the selection of 3000 chairs, nearly 750 banquet tables, and 18 office work spaces.
