Point Lepreau Switchyard Condition Assessment and Standby Generator
Following the simultaneous loss of two existing power supplies to the Point Lepreau switchyard—a substation considered to be a backbone of the NB Power system—the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station set out to create a permanent backup power supply in the form of a standby generator (SG). Our team was there to help.
We were engaged to review potential options and capital cost implications of the supply and installation of a new 250 kilowatt (kW) standby generator to support the plant’s switchyard station service system. We were also asked to perform a condition assessment of the existing electrical switchyard to determine if any equipment upgrades should be completed in parallel with the standby generator installation.
During the project, we reviewed different options associated with the standby generator, including electrical tie-in configuration, diesel fuel tank configuration, and the possible use of diesel-driven air compressors to reduce the electrical load applied to the SG. A site visit was conducted to assess the condition of the existing electrical switchyard. Overall condition was reported as good, with no specific upgrades required prior to installation of the standby generator. The capital costs by option as well as the condition assessment were presented to the client via report.
With the generator now in place, communities in Point Lepreau will have sustained, reliable access to power for years to come.
