Museum of Anthropology - Masterworks Gallery
After a major donation of masterworks by Northwest Coast First Nations artists, the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver needed a gallery to display this varied collection. Thanks to a donor’s significant capital contribution towards construction, all the museum needed was the design.
Their goal? A space that was clearly distinct in character from the other exhibition spaces in the museum, but could also fit in with the existing architecture and design. Our solution was to focus on daylight and neutral colors. We cut a window into the existing concrete wall to introduce a shaft of daylight and a glimpse of nature, and we lined the perimeter ceiling with intensity and color temperature controllable LED lights.
With fabric walls in a soft gray flannel and end grain wood block flooring, stained to a light gray, the focus of this redesigned space (formerly the Museum Theatre) is on the collection.
