Connecting cycling routes: downtown and cross-city

Mackenzie Avenue Bike Lanes

The City of Ottawa enjoys an extensive cycling network but lacks connectivity through the downtown and across the river to Gatineau. As a first step in extending the network, the City, the National Capital Commission (NCC), and the United States Embassy sought to implement a bike track along Mackenzie Avenue with connection to the NCC’s Eastern Rideau Canal Pathway. We were engaged along with an urban planning consultant to provide functional cross sections and alignment components.

Passing directly in front of the United States Embassy, the bike trail had to be designed with security in mind. The new bike track features a combination of curbs and bollards that is both effective and attractive and allows access to the United States Embassy Mackenzie Avenue Ceremonial Entrance which has been blocked since September 2001.

The design includes a cross-ride connecting to the Alexandra Bridge bike track and a protected signal phase at Mackenzie and Rideau connecting to Colonel By Drive. Traffic will be coordinated with sharrows along Colonel By.
