Forensic Science and Coroner’s Complex - Security & IT Systems Design

When all evidence pointed to failing infrastructure, the Centre of Forensic Sciences and the Office of the Chief Coroner, the Province of Ontario had to act. They made the case for a new forensics laboratory space, medical autopsy, and coroner’s courts in one consolidated complex—one location to better serve the people of Ontario.

As a post-disaster and mass casualty facility, resilience in both the structure and its IT systems was paramount. Our design included three uninterruptible power systems and a backup diesel-fired generator to make sure the facility never lost power.

Protecting the integrity of the evidence, chain of custody, and security of personnel were key to the design. Very little of this program is public, so we included a zonal strategy for the physical security system design. Secure access to workspaces is controlled through a number of systems including proximity card readers, biometric readers, and an IP-based surveillance video system.
