Central Yukon Archaeological Model
Predicting areas of archaeological significance is important in identifying routing processes for new land and resource developments. It’s also paramount for academic research and educational purposes. Yet accomplishing an archeological analysis and heritage resources overview assessment (HROA) is no easy feat. Understanding the necessary information across 46,000 square kilometers (17,760 square miles) with virtually no road access or digital maps can prove challenging. That’s why knowing the area and having strong relationships with the local Indigenous population was critical to achieving our goals.
Our team brought forth a strong, in-depth knowledge of existing archaeological sites and conditions. Plus, during the planning phase, we made sure to conduct several interviews and field visits with the local community to learn about traditional land use practices. The result? A comprehensive survey and HROA that documented 126 additional archaeological sites—nearly doubling the number of known survey sites in the region.
Despite the massive area and limited survey data that was initially available, our completed plan easily surpasses the minimum guidelines for archaeological models, promoting safe and diligent practice. But mostly, it will serve as an invaluable archeological resource for years to come.
