St Francis Xavier Cathedral
Completed in 1938, St Francis Xavier Cathedral in Geraldton is a heritage gem, designed by architect Monsignor Hawes and regarded as his finest work, but it had fallen into disrepair. Funded by public donations plus lottery and state monies, we provided staged acoustic, electrical and structural consultancy over seven years to return the cathedral to prominence and built a new heritage centre building with café. The greatest challenge? Preserving the heritage fabric of the cathedral while discreetly implementing upgrades.
We took the opportunity to establish a cable trench when the floor was being replaced to facilitate future access, and services were closely co-ordinated with the architect to minimise visual impact. Internally the lighting was designed to complement the restored finishes, while externally we achieved a welcoming yet restrained ambience. Both lighting and AV are easily controlled via iPad and the system includes external outlets to support events outdoors during peak activities.
Our essential construction and refurbishment work ensures the historic cathedral will be enjoyed by Geraldton’s communities for years to come, supported by a new exhibition space with café.
