New link structures improve airport operations and passenger experience at Perth International Airport

As part of the team under the contractor, Perkins Builders, we delivered full building services, along with civil and aviation scope for the new link structures for three gates at Perth Airport’s Terminal 1 (International)—to improve the passenger experience.

Creating three robust link structures, which fan out from the existing building, posed some challenges working within a busy, live environment, and complying with airport restrictions and constraints. Rising to the challenge, our design allowed the link structures to be prefabricated offsite and transported to site for assembly. The 54-meter trusses were then lifted safely in position with minimal impact on operations. Our design included individual gate service plants, elevators, and controls allowing the structures to be completely independent of the terminal building, thus reducing the impact of construction on day-to-day activities.

Achieving project outcomes involved complex stakeholder engagement, consultation, and negotiation, as well as advice on programming and staging of works.

The new link structures help deliver an improved customer experience for both arriving and departing passengers.
