My Stantec Story: Building a career in the water industry with Josh Checkley

March 27, 2024

Josh, an assistant project manager, shares his passion for collaboration and nature-based solutions

In the My Stantec Story series, our designers, engineers, marketers, project managers, and leaders come together to share how their career journeys at Stantec have shaped their lives and moved them closer to their goals.

Tell us about your role…

As an assistant project manager, I work on programme strategy for water company clients Industry National Environment Programme in Asset Management Period 8 (AMP8)—a critical regulatory phase in the water industry. Before this, I worked as an engineering technician on feasibility studies. As part of my role, I’m also involved with Stantec’s amazing STEM outreach into local education.

What attracted you to a career at Stantec?

Stantec is at the forefront of consulting engineering globally and continues to grow our industry-leading projects and professionals. Its core values and goals align with mine and I especially like that Stantec puts people first—people lead the business directive. Stantec also offers me the chance to network with industry professionals and develop my skills through further education and chartership. Working closely with numerous clients offers further opportunities for growth.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Collaboration suits my personal working style. As an assistant project manager, I interact with clients and various key stakeholders across many industries and communities to blend skills and work together to deliver fantastic projects.

How has your personal and professional development been supported at Stantec?

Stantec offers various engaging and interesting opportunities for continuing professional development. Having started at Stantec in 2018 as a technician fresh from sixth form with A-Levels, I learned to understand feasibility studies from the ground up. When I wanted to develop commercial understanding of the business, I was given the opportunity to explore a new and exciting route with project management. Beyond this, I’m also completing a reciprocal mentoring programme. I’m partnered with an executive leader of the global business to gain an overarching understanding and insights into how Stantec operates.

With ongoing personal and professional development opportunities, the scope for work means that the sky’s the limit for a career at Stantec.

What has been the standout project for you during your time at Stantec?

A project highlight is working on an integrated constructed wetland (ICW), delivering options for our water client and working with technical industry specialists here at Stantec and beyond. Through the design of this first all-flow treatment wetland for our client, we show how nature-based solutions (NbS) and ICWs are the water industry’s future—I’m passionate about supporting water companies to realise the full potential of NbS and ICWs for water treatment.

What are your ambitions for your future at Stantec?

I aim to continue my current trajectory. Project management is a great way to continue to work collaboratively on industry-leading projects with industry-leading professionals. But I would like to gain more exposure to the operations side of the business—building solid relationships with clients in delivering projects and their ever-growing programmes of work, to help them serve their customers.

What are your passions outside of work?

After work I really enjoy getting into the gym. I also love the outdoors, camping, hiking, and exploring. I enjoy spending time seeing new natural corners of the UK and travelling the world. I was lucky enough to have Stantec allow me to take a four-month sabbatical to go off and explore Southeast Asia, which was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I’ll never forget.

Why should others join the Stantec team?

The diversity of professionals and projects at Stantec means that it provides an opportunity to everyone, from developing professionals to technical professionals. Stantec offers the best that the engineering industry has to offer. With ongoing personal and professional development opportunities, the scope for work means that the sky’s the limit for a career at Stantec. So far, I’ve loved working here and I look forward to developing my career to make impactful impressions on projects and our clients.

At Stantec, we put people first. For assistant project manager Josh Checkley, seemingly limitless opportunities means he can grow a fulfilling career for years to come.
