Following the announcement of plans to streamline the funding landscape, Stantec’s community development team explores funding models and challenges

Funding is felt by many in our industry to be a dark art. The funding regeneration landscape is so complex that the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has set out an ambition to simplify it. Until then, does the built environment as a whole really understand the multiple available funding model available and when to use them? In this, the first report in a series, our team maps out the models that exist, delves into current issues, and looks ahead to ask, ‘What next?’

Regeneration funding refers to the targeted use of public and private funding, often in partnership, to regenerate a neighbourhood, town, or city. At its most effective, regeneration can tackle disadvantage, deprivation, dilapidation, create job opportunities, and improve prosperity. The UK Government has announced approximately £78bn of regeneration funding since 2011 but regeneration needs in our towns and cities has never been greater and maximising the resources we have is essential.

This is just the beginning of our exploration of funding regeneration. Our report is intended to inform and provoke discussion about the models available and how we put them to use to improve communities. Our team is on hand if you would like to know more.
