Temporary Flood Defence Deployment Plans

Working with the JacksonHyder joint venture alongside the Environment Agency (EA), we investigated the practical implementation of temporary flood defence deployment in a number of locations across the north of England where there was a need for protection from fluvial or tidal flooding.

Our job? A data gathering and feasibility review exercise to assess the full extent of the defence deployment required. This included a site visit, liaison with EA staff, and gaining an understanding of the deployment trigger points and the time available for defence deployment at each location.

We devised individual step-by-step plans for three sites, tailored to allow consideration of operational requirements in each area. The plans clearly identified flooding trigger points, defence drop off locations, and deployment sequences to allow for quick and efficient response by the local EA team to future flooding events.

Part of the planning required for the deployment is the consideration of road and pedestrian footpath closures and subsequent diversions. Our civils and highways teams prepared traffic management plans to support the quick and effective deployment of the temporary defences, whilst providing alternative access routes for vehicular traffic and pedestrians.
