Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has secured Planning Permission in Principle (PPiP) for the second and final phase of the Scottish Marine Technology Park (SMTP). The permission for the facility on the banks of the River Clyde in Old Kirkpatrick, was granted by West Dunbartonshire Council.
Once built, the Scottish Marine Technology Park will provide a unique environment for world-leading innovators in the marine industry to co-locate, collaborate, and create a self-sustaining eco-system to reinvigorate the shipbuilding and renewables industries in West Dunbartonshire
The consent, delivered by Stantec on behalf of Malin Group Properties Ltd, marks a major step forward on the project’s journey towards delivering this state-of-the-art marine excellence hub for Scotland.
The masterplanned approach includes up to 27,945 square metres of floorspace, comprising units for marine engineering, fabrication, research and development, and associated uses. This includes offices, nursery, a café, site access; internal access roads, yards, parking, approximately 3.2 hectares of open space and landscaping, infrastructure, and associated works.
The technology park will be built to the highest environmental standards, and the campus environment will foster collaboration, enabling organisations to develop new ways of working, where technology is harnessed to create efficiencies and drive forward the marine manufacturing industry.
Within National Development Framework 4, the development is identified as one of eighteen National Developments, and falls within the ‘Clyde Mission’ category. This is a national, place-based mission to make the River Clyde an engine of economic success for Glasgow, the city region, and Scotland.
The plans include the remediation of a heavily contaminated site for Phase 1 of the SMTP. This includes a fabrication building and heavy lift quay with direct access to the River Clyde deep-water channel. The PPiP offers an opportunity to transform the site and bring it back into active economic use and reinstate public access to the waterfront, bringing significant economic, environmental, infrastructure, recreational, and placemaking benefits.
This consent marks a crucial step for this project, which has been built on a foundation of expertise and a trusted client relationship. This Project will help Scotland drive its economy forward to be at the forefront of marine technological innovation. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to play an instrumental role in obtaining this vital consent.
Malin Group’s managing director, John MacSween, added: “We’re pleased at the support the SMTP has received and excited about the potential that it offers Scotland’s marine industry, as well as for local residents in a high unemployment area.
“It will kick start new offerings on the Clyde as well as offer much needed space for growth to existing marine companies in the Greater Glasgow area and beyond. The maritime industry and the opportunities it offers represent a sleeping giant in our economy and we need to create space for small and medium sized marine companies to flourish.”
