Esh-Stantec scheme named project of the year at Northumbrian Water’s GEM Awards
The joint venture’s Grassholme Reservoir project was recognised for its value in bringing local resilience and biodiversity.

Esh-Stantec, a joint venture (JV) between Stantec and Esh Construction, has been recognised at Northumbrian Water Group’s ‘Going the Extra Mile’ (GEM) Awards, with the Grassholme Reservoir Embankment Works scheme winning ‘Project or Programme of the Year’.
Northumbrian Water Group established the GEM Awards to promote, highlight, and celebrate the significant contribution its supply partners play in helping the water company achieve its vision.
When the most recent statutory inspection of Grassholme Reservoir in Country Durham found the northern embankment in need of stabilising, Northumbrian Water appointed Esh-Stantec to reconstruct it and relocate the adjacent watercourse running along its toe. While addressing the instability risks of the embankment for safety, Esh-Stantec also looked to the area’s biodiversity.
Throughout the award-winning project, the team took special care and consideration to protect an ancient semi-natural woodland. Esh-Stantec translocated around 100 trees from the woodland, planted a further 3,700 trees, and diverted 325 metres of the Carl Beck watercourse. The project boosted local water supply resilience and improved biodiversity, while maintaining the sensitive landscape setting.
The Esh-Stantec JV delivers capital schemes through Northumbrian Water’s Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Framework.
