Southern Water appoints Stantec to Planning, Engagement and Consultation Services Framework

Interdisciplinary consultant will now support Southern Water with a range of planning and development expertise

09/11/2024 LONDON, UK TSX, NYSE:STN

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable engineering, architecture, and environmental consulting, has been appointed to Southern Water’s Town & Country Planning, Development Consent Order (DCO) Planning, and associated Engagement and Consultation Services Framework. The framework will run for five years, with the option to extend for another two.

Southern Water is responsible for providing, maintaining, and operating water supply and distribution services covering the counties of Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, and the Isle of Wight. The water company supplies drinking water to approximately 2.5 million households and treats and recycles wastewater from more than 4.7 million.

Teams from Stantec’s extensive Water and Infrastructure teams will now be able to carry out a range of interdisciplinary planning, engagement, and consultation services to support Southern Water’s ambitious network and infrastructure development aspirations.

The work includes providing consultation, counsel, and technical support around permitted development, planning policy, submissions, and appeals for nationally significant infrastructure projects. Following a competitive tender process, Stantec’s stakeholder engagement teams can also now be used to support community liaison and public consultation efforts.

Stantec’s Water teams have been supporting Southern Water with its Water for Life–Hampshire programme. That programme aims to create new, resilient, and sustainable water networks to protect and enhance the county’s rare and sensitive chalk streams while maintaining supplies for communities and the local economy.

The new framework will allow Stantec to deploy its extensive planning and development expertise as the water company looks to expedite vital new infrastructure that will transform the way it sources, treats, and supplies water across the region.

“As water companies across the UK look to future-proof their networks, it’s so important that they are able to properly and efficiently navigate planning policy while bringing the communities they serve along with them,” said Nancy MacDonald, Stantec’s regional business lead for Infrastructure. “Our teams have a broad range of community planning and development expertise and are well versed in supporting DCO project and infrastructure schemes that redefine what’s possible for clients and communities.”

Scott Jackson, Stantec’s regional business lead for Water added: “Southern Water is an incredibly valuable long-term client, and we’re delighted to be supporting them throughout the AMP8 period. It’s exciting to see the expert skills from other areas of our business being able to provide significant value to our water sector clients as we continue to diversify our expertise and improve water resilience across the country.”
