My Stantec Story: Being a graduate project manager with Beatriz Mendes

July 08, 2024

Beatriz, a graduate project manager, shares her experience working in the water sector and at Stantec

In the My Stantec Story series, our designers, engineers, marketers, project managers, and leaders come together to share how their career journeys at Stantec have shaped their lives and moved them closer to their goals.

Tell us about your role…

I’m a graduate project manager supporting the Water group in our Brighton office. I joined Stantec in September of 2023 and was lucky enough to get to work with a very knowledgeable and supportive team that has shown me the best of project management.

What attracted you to a career at Stantec?

Besides offering a generous graduate scheme, Stantec is ahead of the industry in values that I find crucial in my workspace, like inclusion of different beliefs and sexualities. Stantec’s presence within the environmental sector is also one of the biggest reasons that I applied to work here.

Stantec also extends to continents and countries that I would like to explore after acquiring more experience. Being such a flexible company gives me great prospects for the future.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy the day-to-day of my role because it’s always changing and no two days are similar. There are always more things to learn, and new projects and opportunities surface regularly. Many opportunities come with industry leading practices and advanced technology, and I enjoy having the opportunity to be included and learning from these types of projects.

How has your personal and professional development been supported at Stantec?

Stantec has continuously pushed for my professional development and aided me whenever I was interested in a new opportunity or cause. Some examples are the Developing Professionals Group (DPG) and WaterAid’s Winnovators competition, where we are helping to develop innovative solutions for water, sanitation and hygiene challenges currently faced by communities in Papua New Guinea.

Stantec also provides great in-house training and has various partnerships with external organisations to provide employees with access to training, not just relevant to their roles, but also to their interests.

What has been the standout project for you during your time at Stantec?

Keeping in mind that I have only been with Stantec since September, a project that stood out for me was the Pathfinders projects due to the variety and complexity. It was great seeing how the project managers handled such large endeavours and supported a smooth delivery.

What are your ambitions for your future at Stantec?

I aim to work on bigger projects that involve various sectors, offices, and countries, and maybe even work from a different country.

What are your passions outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy learning new languages, exercising, and collecting vinyl records.

Why should others join the Stantec team?

I think Stantec has a great way of supporting graduates and helping them build a desirable career. There is a lot to experiment with at Stantec for all employees and great values that support Stantec’s employees not just professionally but personally too.

At Stantec, we put people first. For Beatriz, that means exploring the role of a project manager in the water sector and getting to grow in her knowledge and skills . If you want to start your career at Stantec, visit Careers to find out more.
