Brewery Yard

Decommissioned in the 1980s and formed as four interconnecting structures, the former Carlton & United Brewery building is located on a heritage site in the heart of the Chippendale conservation area. On the fringe of the Sydney central business district, this site will form the final piece in the development of Chippendale Green.

Stantec was engaged to design a new structure to allow for the renovation, reinterpretation, and repurposing of this unique heritage structure. The building not only includes original pyramid coal hoppers and grain silos, but also supports and integrates equipment for the Chippendale tri-generation plant. This would be a consideration in our structural design of two new rooftop floors. Working within the confines of an existing building with limited capabilities, we created a structural design with an adaptive and creative engineering approach.

The work was technically challenging and represents a positive collaboration between client, structural engineer, architect, and heritage consultant. By bringing life back to this heritage structure through renovation and repurposing, we have also left residents with a positive visual amenity that adds activity to the Chippendale Green community.
