Shaun works in a mixture of transport fields, predominantly in road safety with the aim of preventing death and serious injury on New Zealand’s roads. He leads our level crossing safety work and conducts network safety inspections and crash reduction studies. He’s the Network Manager on behalf of the Chatham Islands Council and has worked on numerous Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency business cases.
Level crossing safety is Shaun’s specialty—he helped KiwiRail create the Level Crossing Safety Impact Assessment process, which is now the industry standard to assess the safety risks at 2,800 level crossings in New Zealand. This project is making a huge difference to the safety of newly installed level crossings and upgrades around the country and was recognised with a “Best Paper Award” at the 2020 Transport Research Board Annual Meeting in Washington DC.
Outside of work Shaun loves exploring new areas of Christchurch as it rebuilds, and with three small children he might get in a rare game of golf.
