Ryan Abrey

Principal Civil Engineer/Acting Wellington Delivery Lead

Photo of Ryan

A professionally registered engineer, Ryan has more than a decade of experience in the civil and coastal disciplines. He has a keen interest in engineering solutions that help with adapting to climate change and coastline resiliency—working with his team to solve clients’ complex challenges is one of the most rewarding parts of his role.

Ryan understands that listening to the client and broader community is paramount to the project's success. One such project, the Mataikona Road improvement project, involves a section of road prone to disruptions due to coastal erosion and slips. Ryan actively engaged in public consultation and coordinated various design elements as project technical lead, such as geometric road features, geotechnical considerations, and coastal aspects. The result provided council with a clearer picture of what’s required to create a more resilient roadway for locals and visitors alike.

Outside his work with coastlines and roadways resiliency, Ryan is treasurer for the New Zealand Coastal Society and is a member of the International Water Association (IWA) and the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IHAR) International Joint Committee for Outfall Systems. He's also an avid trail runner and a local leader at his church.
