University Lakes Flood Risk Reduction Design
Originally built in 1933, The University Lakes System was created from a Cypress-Tupelo swamp in the floodplain of Bayou Duplantier. By the late 2010’s the system of waterways that includes the lakes, the nearby Corporation Canal, and Bayou Duplantier had been degraded through years of sedimentation and recent flooding.
Our team developed a plan to improve water quality and reduce flood risk while increasing natural habitat and providing expanded and safer recreational opportunities for the entire University Lakes system. The plan includes dredging the lakes reusing the spoils to create vegetative buffers along the shoreline to process nutrients and pollutants. The design also plans to achieve water quality and flood risk improvements by performing such upgrades to hydrologic connections as reconstructing the outfall weir connecting University Lake to Bayou Duplantier into a gate structure, as well as replacing an under-sized culvert connecting University to City Park lakes with a bridge. The project has also involved intense coordination with landscape architects for proper vegetation establishment and plantings.
Upon completion, our work will improve water quality, allow for improved lake draw downs, and ultimately better protect the community from future flooding.
