UC Davis Chilled Water Plant
Operational costs are vital to any organization, but as our universities weather difficult economic times they need every opportunity to save money so they can focus on providing the best education possible. At UC Davis, our analysis showed that new chillers would result in a lower overall cost of providing chilled water to the campus when compared to the parallel operation of the existing chillers.
We provided detailed design of a 4,000 ton expansion to the UC Davis TES chiller plant. The design included two new 2,000 ton electric centrifugal chillers, two new 2,000 ton cooling towers, associated pumps, and a new building extension to house the chillers. We evaluated what it would take to convert the existing DDC based plant control system to a new PLC based system that could interface directly with the existing controls in the main powerhouse, and developed a detail controls design for both the DDC based and PLC based options to secure alternate bids from contractors. Our team demonstrated the potential to include a free cooling heat exchanger to reduce total cooling electrical needs and designed a free cooling system that interfaced with the new chillers and existing TES system.
