A new health care hub provides more beds and services for the community

In 2022, the South Carolina General Assembly, at the urging of Senator Hugh Leatherman, passed a budget that included funds intended to increase the number of psychiatric beds available for inpatient psychiatric care in communities with the greatest need. As a result, MUSC Health partnered with the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the South Carolina Department of Mental Health, the City of Florence, McLeod Health, Hope Health, and Circle Park partnered to establish a new behavioral health care facility in Florence South Carolina, increasing the number of inpatient behavioral health beds in Florence to 63. This new, state-funded facility will serve the community with outpatient, inpatient, counseling, telehealth, crisis stabilization, and acute psychosis services.

As the owner's representative, we’re providing an entire suite of project management services and overseeing the design and construction teams from inception to completion. We’re also supplying civil engineering services as a partner to the project team. This behavioral health care facility project started in April 2023 and is scheduled to open in October 2025. This was an 11-month execution from design kick-off to topping out (when the last beam is placed during construction). Along with our partners, we’re taking this project through to completion, fast-tracking our services to help meet tight deadlines. With our leadership, the team was able to cost engineer the estimated spend by approximately $20 million through these fast-tracked services and an integrated project delivery approach.

When complete, the new MUSC Health Jean and Hugh K. Leatherman Behavioral Care Pavilion will contribute to the well-being of the community with dedicated adult and adolescent behavioral health services.
