Master Planning for Southwest and Roscoe Righter Parks
In the City of Blue Springs, Missouri, two master plans were needed to transform undeveloped land into public parks. The intent was to create solutions that meet the needs of the city’s park system.
Stantec provided program development and site design to create a master plan for each park. Our design for the 75-acre Roscoe Righter Park includes several amenities such as a large activity center, an open flex-lawn, a multi-season ice and inline skating ribbon, rock climbing, pickleball, an adventure course, and shared use paths and trails that wander through wildflower fields with iconic shelters at strategic locations. For the 55-acre Southwest Park, our design takes advantage of the site's partially wooded property and two natural streamways to provide a natural setting that combines a variety of active, passive, and venue-oriented opportunities. The master plan includes two event facilities, flexible open space to accommodate outdoor venues, picnic areas, an aerial tree walk, bike trails, a sledding hill, and a variety of shelters strategically positioned throughout the site.
Effort was placed in understanding the larger context of city green space and the relationship to adjacent conservation properties, allowing the parks to not only become extensions of the city’s park system but also tie into a larger regional green system.
