Flamingo I-515 Interchange
The I-515 and Flamingo Road was aging and needed rehabilitation. Our team helped the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) redevelop this early 1980s interchange to reflect the desert ecosystem that surrounds Las Vegas.
The master plan was developed from one of three design themes our team presented to NDOT staff and stakeholders to review. It features custom artistic, patterned perforated screen fences—a first in Las Vegas—and freestanding gabion walls strategically placed at the interchange off-ramps as “gateways,” and at other locations to screen out unwanted views from the traveling public. The gateways also feature Clark County wetland wildlife scenes made of powder coated aluminum raised off the gabion walls.
As an initiative to promote sustainability and simultaneously deal with existing challenges, large open areas between the ramps were re-graded and planted with native non-irrigated plants and hydroseed. These areas will act as bio-retention basins to clean the stormwater before discharging and recharging into the groundwater table.
