Utilizing public art to create an attractive streetscape

Craig Road Streetscape

Working with the City of North Las Vegas, we developed a streetscape masterplan for five miles of Craig Road—a major city arterial, heavily used by the public. We were asked to design this segment in conjunction with the streetscape treatment to the west of this project, which is complete with trees, shrubs, boulders, and irrigation.

After reviewing the existing construction documents, questions were raised about existing water and power, and whether they would be available to the median islands. When our findings came back, we saw that attempting to continue the streetscape would not be in the city’s best interest.

Instead, our team came up with a creative solution to design a streetscape theme that requires no irrigation and maintenance, and would engage the traveling public through public art. We chose to celebrate the Mojave Desert with colorful monument walls to frame each end of each median that were designed as breakaway walls to protect the travelers when hit. The other areas of the medians have freestanding sculptures featuring native desert plants painted in bright colors, and boulders and color landscape rock to complete the designs. This simple idea turned a busy arterial into an appealing drive.
