A brownfield site investigation and remediation to allow for new development and enhance the community

Before the Astoria Steel site—a brownfield location in the Tri-State region—could be transformed into a new, mixed-use community, our team would have to step in to provide environmental services. We would analyze the 52,000-square-foot site for Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), a harmful and outdated compound. Doing so helped to determine whether the brownfield site could be redeveloped into a safe, urban setting.

Our PCB site characterization for this former foundry involved many steps. We evaluated concrete, asphalt, and soil samples on a 25-square-foot grid across the site, and we collected soil samples on 10-square-foot grids where PCBs were identified. Other contaminants at this NYSDEC Brownfield site included chlorinated solvents, petroleum, heavy metals, pesticides, ash, and cinders.

We provided several critical actions, such as removing and disposing of PCB hazardous waste surface debris, power-washing and vacuuming the entire site, and installing construction fencing. Our efforts removed contaminants, addressed potential water and wind-blown erosion, reduced contaminant levels in the buildings, and prevented trespassing and vandalism. The result? Achieving our client’s goals, saving our client’s money, and benefitted the surrounding community.
