Making big changes on a tight budget

Airport Community Schools needed to align their aging facilities with their future vision for education. Our job? Lead the Airport Community Schools board through a visioning, planning, and design process that would ultimately help them pass the bond and create the highest impact with limited funds.

Over the course of a year, we held four visioning sessions with the board to establish the framework for a facilities improvement committee and identify future improvements. At the same time, we assessed the facilities to understand what we were working with. The total cost for needed improvements came in at $30 million.

With our help, the improvement committee prioritized the most critical renovations. The urgent fixes (the first phase of renovations) totaled a manageable $11 million. Improvements included transformative renovation to media centers, trading 20-year-old portable classrooms for a three-classroom science addition, paving, replacing HVAC, and upgrading security.

Creating a vision and a plan allowed Airport Community Schools to address much-needed updates throughout the district.
