Titus Salt School

Titus Salt School takes its name from the 19th century English philanthropist who built nearby Saltaire Village, now given World Heritage protection. It occupies a narrow belt of land between woodland and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Stantec worked closely with the school, UNESCO and community stakeholders throughout the design stages. The result is a new school that is in harmony with its setting and engages with its community.

The architecture is strong and simple. The use of local Yorkshire stone on the ground floor roots the school in its context while the upper floors are enlivened with white render and rainbow splashes of colour. Six wings are organised around a central spine in a ribbon effect creating a series of gardens and external learning areas. The shared school and community facilities are located at the end of the spine and have their own entrance. This establishes a secure threshold between formal teaching areas and shared areas which can remain open outside school hours. The local community has access to the informal dining area, sports hall, gymnasium, fitness suite, dance studio and learning resource centre.

Titus Salt School is progressive, inclusive, and engaging.

A head teacher recently remarked, ‘I can’t believe it, this is wonderful, exactly what you presented to us all that time ago.’ Sometimes delight is derived from simply joining the dots.
